Can Chewing Gum Replace the Need to Floss?

Chewing sugar-free gum can support your oral health, but it’s not a substitute for flossing. A study by researchers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands found that chewing sugar-free gum immediately after eating can remove up to 100 million bacteria from the mouth. This sparked headlines suggesting that chewing gum could be as effective as flossing. But there are important distinctions to understand.

What Chewing Gum Actually Does

Chewing stimulates saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and neutralize acids. The gum itself can also trap bacteria and debris, especially when chewed right after meals. However, researchers noted that the benefits diminish when gum is chewed for longer than 10 minutes. At that point, it can lose its stickiness and reintroduce bacteria into the mouth.

What Gum Can’t Do

While chewing gum can remove surface-level bacteria, it does not remove plaque or tartar, especially below the gumline. These are the main contributors to gum disease and tooth decay. Only flossing and professional cleanings can effectively reach these areas.

The Role of Flossing in Oral Health

Flossing removes plaque and food particles between teeth and under the gumline, places your toothbrush and chewing gum simply can’t reach. Skipping this step can allow plaque to harden into tartar, leading to inflammation, cavities, and periodontal disease.

The Bottom Line

Chewing sugar-free gum, especially varieties with xylitol, can be a helpful addition to your oral care routine. But it’s not a replacement for brushing and flossing. For optimal oral health:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss at least once daily
  • Chew sugar-free gum after meals if brushing isn’t immediately possible
  • Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups
