TMJ and Metallic Taste in the Mouth

Posted: June 24, 2015

A persistent metallic taste in the mouth can be caused by a number of oral health problems. Among these is TMJ, a condition caused by misalignment of the jaw. In addition to a metallic taste in the mouth, symptoms of TMJ may include:

  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Pain or swelling around the jaw joint
  • Headaches
  • Neck, shoulder, and backaches
  • Tinnitus or ear pain

These symptoms, particularly when combined, should be brought to the attention of Austin TMJ dentist Dr. John Schmid for a prompt treatment evaluation.

Other Oral Health Concerns

A metallic taste in the mouth may be a symptom of TMJ. It may also be caused by other oral health concerns including tooth infection and gum disease. If you have noticed an unpleasant, bitter, or metallic taste in the mouth for more than one week, calling Dr. Schmid for an examination is a good idea. Most oral health issues can be easily treated when caught early on, but procrastination can result in serious issues including tooth loss, bone necrosis, and even systemic illness.

If you have noticed a metallic taste in the mouth that will not respond to brushing, please contact Dr. John Schmid to schedule an appointment today. Dr. Schmid welcomes patients from Austin, Round Rock, and all surrounding areas of Texas.
